Documenting - The Mother Road - Life on Route 66

Getting myself and my new little car ready for summer travels I decided to do some test miles along my favorite backroad, Route 66. I am not set up for a sleeping trip just yet so I did 2 different day trips. On both I drove down to Kingman, AZ, and hooked up with the Route, once going East and once West.

The images I share in this slide show are from Walapai, AZ east of Kingman to Amboy, CA. The road from the Giganticus Headicus to Kingman rides along the railroad and has beautiful views of the mountains to the north.

Kingman is full of history and the museum is worth a trip if open. There are shops, restaurants, and old roadside motels. Stop and get some small-town food or take a walk in the downtown area before you head back into the desert to make the ride into Oatman. Water is important at all times of the year, the desert will dry you out in the winter as well as the summer.

The road into Oatman, AZ is a switchback road along a mountainside. It offers looks at the desert expanses and wildlife. Watch the speeds as the turns are sharp and a donkey may be around the next turn. It was truly magical to experience as I made my way into the old town of Oatman.

Oatman is worth stopping and taking a walk. You can buy food to feed the donkeys, who do own the town. There are wonderful little shops and a few places to grab some food and a drink. If you are there at the right time you may see them do a wild west reenactment.

Keep an eye out for more images and information from my trips and other adventures.
